Website files complaint against Google in a lawsuit that basically says they are left out of the search engine ranking system.
Kinderstart is a really cool website. You’d wonder why anyone would want to blacklist this site.
I wonder if they are related to the early Kidsafe web search that Apple built-in to OS 9 and presented during their Keynote 1999? That was a great site that remains the only 100% kid safe that blocks 100% porn content and other unsafe content that I know of it. It was way better than any of the top porn blockers on the market today. That could be a possible reason, since porn pop-up are thought to be driving the economy of search engines, even though stats show they average a 1 in 70,000 chance of getting clicked. Especially from kids who’ve seen so much porn - thanks to the companies who sell their name whenever they download “Free” stuff or get certain well-known Instant Messenger accounts or so called “Free” email accounts - that they are too either too bored or too tired to actually bypass the request to click 69,9999 times out of 70,000 request.
At that rate it hardly seems to be enough reason to end their addiction to a “Free” account that actually makes billions selling their names to anyone willing to pay, in otherwords: spammers, pornographers, pedophiles, scammers, hackers, thieves, stalkers, voyeurs, malicious code writers, virus authors, kidnappers, underground rings, drug dealers, etc. I mean really, would the “Honest” person want to buy that list if they knew they had a 1 in 70,000 chance. Then again, would a dishonest person really care if one of the 70,000 is all need. Turns out that 1 in 70,000 does in fact generate billions of hits. As the 411 spammer (see previous link, entitled, “I will eat your dollars”) affirmed, if a person responds to any of his junk mail he has a 70% chance of getting his money. And when he can make hundreds or even thousands off of just one click, that’s worth it to him. The 411 spammer also admits to using 500 fake hotmail IDs everyday.
But, the question is it worth it to your family to allow it? One family from Hagersville, Ontario may need to rethink it. In an interview in the Hamilton Spectator article Internet porn combined with lack of parental restraint were contributing factors to the horrendous crime in Hagersville.
The concern I have with the Google issue is that are they blacklisting great family oriented sites that are boring, in favour of porn rich site that are exciting. By porn rich sites, I mean, site that use pop-ups and porn ads to increase the number of clicks they get on their sites - along with a host of other tricks - to encourage a higher search engine rating.
Google search recipe is a guarded secret that is now being challenged by other sites - including sites that are design to provide a safe place for kids and sites from people and businesses that are too poor to afford tricking out their site for the purpose of generating hits.
We typed in “iC SuperCOMPUTERS” into Apple Safari’s built-in Google Search box. Out of 139,000 entries, iC SuperCOMPUTERS came up with 7 out of the top 10 entries (the first page). Five of the top 10 were related to iC SuperCOMPUTERS. They included some links to our own webpages and links to other sites that mention iC SuperCOMPUTERS on their own websites.
The concern would be the relativity of the other sites listed. On the first page, there was no porn sites - good news. The most common of the other sites in the top listings included stories that contain both the mention of IC chips and SuperCOMPUTERS. The second most common of the non-related sites where articles which mention supercomputers. They were even a couple where our site was listed in a tremendously long list dedicated to supercomputers.
I didn’t see a problem with that. It appears to be fair use, considering we don’t purchase any search engine tricks. We simply have a counter. In fact, right now, we don’t have a counter for our links pages, but that’s another story.
What about the last entry? Turns out that out of the 139,000 entries Google would only show us 762 of them, which accounted for 77 pages (762 divided by 10). I know that’s 76.2 pages, well, the last two entries are on page 77.
The last two entries are:
This is not bad. Especially considering that Mac’s PowerPC ships are the same PowerPC chips made by IBM for use in their supercomputers. Even though it’s indirectly related to us, it’s still relative, free of tricks and not pornographic.
But, that’s only a search using a specific search. The question is how does the ranking work with general searches? Or, how would you search for us? And what would those results yield? That is something we’ll have to watch for as the trial progresses. But, we do keep in mind that we haven’t actually registered our site with search engines - instead the search engine spiders have found us. For that, it’s still impressive to us that people do find us. At some point we should register, every business is encouraged to do so - but it does serve as a tribute to Google’s ability to find relevant searches - even with a site that doesn’t use tricks and hasn’t even registered.
NOTE: I’ll have to confirm the registration part, to rule out the possibility that someone else has registered our name with Google on their own. If that is the case, a big thank-you. But, as far as I know, our listing in Google was solely based on Google’s search engine’s ability to work as advertised.
Ditto for Lycos, WebCrawler, Yahoo and others where iC SuperCOMPUTERS is also listed.
